Tacloban’s Sangyaw Festival 2013

It was my first time to witness Tacloban’s Sangyaw Festival also known as the Festival of Lights. It offers a combination of float and costume parade and a little bit of street dancing. Sangyaw is a local dialect which means to announce. This yearly event started during the time of former first lady Imelda Marcos.

I could’ve missed the Sangyaw Festival due to typhoon Gorio but it was moved the night after so I was lucky enough to witness the event.

The concept was actually interesting but the way it was organized and presented was kinda disappointing. It was confusing whether it was the end of the parade or not. The intervals between two participating floats were so huge that you would think it was already over. The marshal passed by but it was only after around 10 minutes that the first participating float arrived. It was a chaotic parade. Some of the participants were already in a hurry catching up the previous float so they were already running fast and you will not be able to capture a photograph of them. Hopefully next year will be better.
